Managing incorrect MBC handling scenarios on support vessels

Although the recommended handling procedure is to use a spreader bar to install and deploy the MBC off the support vessel, Gall Thomson has received operational feedback over the last 45 years that the spreader bar is not always available offshore or the support vessel may not have the correct lifting capabilities.
This can result in an incorrect Marine Breakaway Coupling handling. See below:

1. Increased robustness of PetalC when handled on vessel stern rollers

Robust offshore handling can occur with floating hoses on FPSO/CALM/SALM during connection to the tanker manifold, unwrapping hoses from the buoy or hose and MBC inspection on a support vessel.
During these scenarios, the Marine Breakaway Coupling can be subject to high bending moments during friction on the stern roller.

2. The Marine Breakaway Coupling can be subject to high bending moments during hose connection to the tanker manifold

When floating hoses are connected to a VLCC tanker, the MBC might be exposed to the splash zone and subject to wave motions (including additional or varying wave periods and wave heights).
Robust MBC handling combined with hoses-wave actions could generate extreme loads on the MBC.
